Streatham Hub Leisure

Forming part of the Streatham Hub, Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre was formally opened in 2013. As a development, it was significant not only architecturally, but also for the local community.

This is because it saw the reinstallation of an ice rink to Streatham via an Olympic-sized rink complete with 1000 seat arena.

The Space

This world-class leisure facility in Streatham also boasts a gym, exercise studios, a four court sports hall, three community rooms and two swimming pools.

The Project

Significantly, Streatham’s ice rink is the first in Europe – and only the second globally – to be built above a swimming pool. This in itself brought about a whole host of challenges for Vinci Construction. As a result, the Streatham Hub build project took over ten years planning time.

This was because having an ice rink that needs cooling to -5°C above a pool that needs to be maintained at 30°C takes innovation and ergonomic design, especially when there are no modern examples of this style of complex build to draw inspiration from.

So as to not interfere with the remarkable thermo-regulating engineering that is in place at the Streatham Hub, what was central to the design was that all partition, compartmentation and non-load bearing walls were as space efficient as possible. It was also critical that each element installed was done so with pinpoint precision and accuracy.

Optima was commissioned to provide Streatham’s new Leisure Centre and Ice Rink with glass sliding doors that offered a separation between the teaching pool and main pool, being a six-lane 25m pool.

The product selected for this particular job was Optima’s Kinetic Lite sliding glass doors. Sliding doors maximise available floor space by negating the need for a swinging door. Kinetic Lite sliding glass doors consist of a 10mm heat soaked toughened glass leaf acting on carriages within an aluminium head track. This makes them not only robust but also sleek and elegant for a seamless finish.

Optima was also required to install a single glazed screen with automatic double leaf sliding doors in the entrance lobby. This installation had to be of the highest aesthetic quality to welcome members and potential clientele into the centre.

The Result

The project was a huge success and one that we are proud to put our name to.  It was delivered on time and to the highest quality.

This nationally leading facility, signified by Streatham Hub, was opened in 2013 by the renowned Olympic gymnast, Beth Tweddle.
