From an early stage of the project, Optima demonstrated its ability to meet the project’s unique partitioning design demands whilst also delivering the bespoke scheme efficiently and to an exceptionally high standard.

Built by main contractor Carillion, the ground-breaking super hospital showcases healthcare, construction and technological innovations. In the facility’s critical care units (CCU), Optima provided a bespoke partitioning system incorporating over 2,395m2 of glazed wall panels which enables staff to see into each unit without the need to enter the room and disturb the patient.

The company’s extensive package of work included a wide and expansive range of glass partitions, sliding door sets, hinged door sets and pivoting door sets – with Optima proving its ability to meet the most challenging specifications by designing, engineering and installing a number of bespoke solutions.

In total, Optima supplied 60 x sliding door sets, 67 x hinged door sets and 8 x pivoting door sets which were double glazed using 6mm glass to both sides. All doors were supplied as double sets with leaf sizes ranging from 2,555mm x 662mm to the largest panels of 2,647mm x 953mm.

Officially opened in May 2014, Southmead Hospital represents the future of healthcare design and construction in the UK. With careful consideration to every element of its interior and exterior – including over 500 glazed partitioning screens and 135 glazed door sets from Optima – the development sets the standard for others to follow.
