Deciding their existing office was unable to adapt to their future needs, Russell Kennedy approached Carr for assistance. Known for their strategic approach, the interior design studio masterminded a multifaceted proposal centred on efficiency, sustainability, wellbeing and inclusion.
Carr explains, “Rigorous strategic and functional briefing stages revealed a law firm with a long history of approachable and collaborative relationships. The new working environment needed to reflect and direct this for both the team and hosted guests.”
Significantly influenced by the defining gridwork of the building façade, the interior harmonises aesthetically by featuring a secondary oak grid. This enduring yet warm geometry informs the architectural language throughout the scheme. “The resulting articulation dictates the layout of spaces and creates a strong colonnade, providing visual clarity and grounding the interior spaces within the context of the building,” continues Carr.
The adaptable design takes a modular approach where offices and private meeting rooms can be reconfigured as future needs change. In addition, seamless use of integrated technology supports modern ways of working, helping to drive the firm’s aspirations. Now staff and guests can work from anywhere at any given time enabled by an intuitive and unobstructed workflow.
Spanning levels 16-19, all four floors carefully consider user needs and wellbeing. For example, the reception and waiting areas are intentionally positioned to maximise views and access to daylight. These calming and welcoming zones help relax guests quickly, easing them into their day.
Elsewhere, connectivity is the focus, with meeting areas encouraging collaboration, and hospitality spaces enabling gatherings of all kinds. An interconnecting stairway links breakout areas on all four levels encouraging movement, connectivity and opportune encounters. Considered planting softens these surrounding spaces as it cascades down the stair positively impacting staff health and wellbeing.
Both Carr and Russell Kennedy aspired to high sustainability goals with the scheme. In addition to responsible specification of new materials, Carr identified ways to reuse and refurbish existing furniture. Their efforts were rewarded with a five Green Star rating across the entire project.
The strong and cohesive geometric motif throughout the interior defines and harmonises the scheme. The choices of material also balance each other visually and texturally. The cool, smooth concrete and glass are offset by the tactile warmth of the oak grid, textural-fabrics and wood wool. Finally, the attention to detail and exquisite finish throughout elevates the scheme beyond the everyday.
Peter Messina, Head of Operations at Optima Australia commented “Projects of this calibre are always something special to be a part of – especially when we’re involved from early specification stage.”
Carr has realised a future focused workplace for Russell Kennedy that is authentic, sustainable and beautifully detailed. A perfect tribute to the aspirations and values of the leading law firm.
